Current Skincare Routine: Morning

When I first started my blog, I always felt that my knowledge of skincare was weak. I did not feel confident writing reviews and I did not want to make recommendations as I did not feel like I knew enough of the science to truly know if a product was any good or not. Flash forward 5 years and things have certainly changed.

In 2018 I made it my mission to learn more about skincare and learn was exactly what I did. I tried to teach myself about the different ingredients and I also took the time to really find out about my own skin and consider the things I wanted to change. I am now at a point where I love writing about skincare and some of my friends even come to me for skincare advice which thrills me. Recently a question came up and I thought it would be a good blog post and the question was basically, what is my skincare routine?

I used to write skincare routines all the time but my content has changed to include more fashion which means I do not write about beauty quite as much as I used to. However, sometimes it is nice to go back to a classic blog post and I thought it would be a great opportunity to share my routine.

I am going to write about my morning routine and my evening routine separately or the blog post would be too long. Today's post is my morning routine and Thursday will be my Evening Routine. I say my routine but depending on how my skin is looking, I might swap out a couple of products. However for the most part I am just going to stick to what I use daily or this post is going to be far longer than it needs to be.

Morning Routine

Cleanser > Eye Cream > Serum > Moisturiser > SPF

I try to keep my morning routine quite basic. I am not a morning person so there is no point committing myself to a long skincare regime as I am not going to get up earlier just to do extra skincare that I don't really need to do.

Above is the standard order in which I use my products. It is rare I will use anything else in the morning and I feel like this is enough for my skin. Back in the day I didn't bother with a morning routine as I didn't feel like my skin benefited from it but in recent years, I have started doing it. If you don't think your skin needs anything in the morning, do not bother. Listen to your skin.

Cleanser

I am going to admit something and I do not want you to judge me, I use my cleanser in the shower! This is a no no as most of us shower in water that is too hot to use on our faces and I like my shower temperature to resemble the pits of hell so I know I shouldn't use that water on my face but I do it anyway as the thought of another step in getting ready seems too much for me.

The type of cleansers I go for in the mornings are typically gel cleansers as they are cooling and not too thick but to be honest it depends on what I have in my beauty draw. At the moment I am using the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser which is perfect for the shower. It is incredibly cooling, it leaves your skin feeling refreshed and soft, and it is easy to remove. This cleanser does smell rather strongly of Rose so if you do not like Rose scents, this is not going to be for you but overall I find this cleanser incredibly calming and I would certainly repurchase this, if I didn't have cleansers waiting in my draw.

Eye Cream

I don't normally swap out my eye cream between my morning and evening routine but at the moment I am and that is due to the eye cream I am using in my morning routine. I do not feel as though this eye cream is as necessary in the evenings and I have other issues I want to address. Personally I only like to use brightening products in the morning and I want something that is going to hydrate in the evening which is why I swap this out. I realise I am lucky enough to have this option but if you cannot afford to use two different eye creams you can of course use this both morning and night.

I have recently started using The Inkey List Brighten-I Eye Cream. I had seen a lot of people speak about this prior to actually being able to buy it. Whenever I went on a website to buy this, it was always out of stock but I eventually found some in Bath.

This is a very light cream that is thin enough to come out of a tube rather than coming in a pot and on the tip of the tube is a metal tip which makes such a difference to the application of this product. I dot a small amount of product along my under eye and use the metal tip to blend it in. Using the metal tip is so cooling and helps to de-puff the eye area which is why this lends itself to the morning. The cream sinks in really quickly and it does brighten your under eye area and over time it does make a lasting change. My under eye area feels more hydrated than it has in a long time so the eye cream combo I am using seems to be working.

One thing to note is that when you push the product to the top of the tube, you can see a shimmer within the cream. This shimmer does not translate on to your face which is good as no one wants glitter chunks under their eyes but I wanted to mention it as I didn't want that to put you off such a lovely eye cream.

Please just make sure you use an eye cream, the eye area is the most delicate skin on your body and it is the first area to show signs of ageing so you want to take care of it.

Serum

I always use my eye cream before a serum as I want the eye cream to have the greatest effect on that area and it also sort of protects the eye area from any products you might put on top. It is definitely something you want to consider when you are planning your routine.

I have always been a massive fan of Hyaluonic Acid as my morning serum as I want as much hydration as I can get but lately I have swapped to using a Vitamin C serum in the form of the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum. The Truth Serum is a Vitamin C complex and when it is used in the morning, it works as an anti-oxidant which helps to protect your skin against free-radicals, pollution and in some ways skin damage. Through doing all of this, your skin ends up looking brighter and Vitamin C also helps to boost the production of Collagen which also makes your skin look more radiant. Using the Truth Serum has made such a difference to my skin.

Sometimes I will still use my Hyaluronic Acid and I am currently using the Boots Ingredients Hyaluronic Acid Serum and you would use this after a Vitamin C. Most serums will go on top of a Vitamin C so that it can have a good chance at working its magic. Vitamin C is not a stable compound so when it is exposed to oxygen, it breaks down so putting it on first allows it to do its best work. Normally in a routine, you work through the products by using the lightest texture first and you work through to thickest which makes Vitamin C an exception to this rule. I think there are a few Vitamin Cs which you use after but they will say specifically in the instructions if this is the case.

Hyaluronic Acid is something everyone could do with using as it is simply a hydration product. Hyaluronic Acid holds up to 1000x its weight in water and it helps the moisture to penetrate the skin. You want to look for one which has different molecular weight so it can penetrate different levels of the skin. If I weren't using the Truth Serum, I would just use this as the serum in the morning.

Moisturiser

It is incredibly rare that I use a moisturiser and I am completely blown away by the results, they are all essentially the same. At the end of the day, they create a barrier to keep moisture in and to allow the products you have put on before to work their magic.

There are a few moisturisers I have used which I have really liked but the one I am using at the moment is not one of them. I am currently using the Ole Henriksen C-Rush Brightening Gel Creme. I got this as part of the same Ole Henriksen set that the Truth Serum came in so I am using them at the same time but I can't say I love this as much as the serum. This cream has the same candied orange scent which is very powerful and I enjoy the creme/gel texture but the results aren't amazing. It works and it feels lovely on your skin, very refreshing and it sinks in quickly, but it is nothing out of the ordinary.

I think it is hard to get excited about a moisturiser. It is hard to tell if one is amazing if you have anything other than dry skin but I have normal/combination. The main thing is this moistuiser does not exaggerate my oily patches which means it definitely works but I won't rush out to buy this. I will just see what else comes into my beauty stash.

SPF

An SPF of 30 or above should be a must for everyone but for my fellow gingers a SPF of 50 is something you should be applying everyday. Of course not at the moment whilst we all wallow in self-pity within our homes during the strangest period of most of our lives but when we eventually go back out into the world, it is something we will still need.

A good SPF can be hard to find as a lot of them will make you look greasy and break you out, some can leave a white cast on your skin and some completely disrupt your makeup. This is why it is so important to find a good one. I have always loved and used the Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50. I can't remember who spoke about this which convinced me to buy it, even though it is pricey whoever it was, I cannot thank them enough. This is the perfect SPF for underneath makeup as it sinks in quite quickly and it does not disrupt your makeup. It also goes completely transparent which is important for people who actually have a skin colour. It also doesn't feel thick on the skin which is something I have found with a lot of SPFs and it is a feeling I cannot stand so ever since I found this, I have not stopped buying it.

If you want an SPF to remain effective you need to buy a new one each year.  I must admit I do not wear an SPF during Winter, I know I should but honestly I just want to live a little. However as soon as I see a speck of that Summer sun, I am out buying SPF. Of course I haven't bought one for this year yet but I am thinking of perhaps changing it up a little bit; I have heard really good things about The Body Shop SPF 50 which I think I might actually try this year as I want to see what the fuss is about and it has just been relaunched as it was recently reformulated. You never know I might not need to buy an SPF this year depending on when this lockdown ends, I mean we could potentially miss Summer completely.

I thought it was important to share some of the reasons I order my products in the way I do so that if you are looking to create a routine, but I don't know where to start, you sort of have some basic ideas. If you do want any advice, please feel free to ask, I am no expert but I am willing to help where I can.

I hope at least one person finds this helpful and as I say, please feel free to ask any questions and keep an eye out for my evening routine which does differ slightly. The actual routine is similar but the products are different and the actives are different.
