Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:10 PM PDT

Beyoncé's "Halo" has reached the milestone of a billion views as YouTube steps up its "Stay Home" campaign to fight coronavirus. This week the Internet giant hosted "Jam #WithMe" livestreams with stars such as Dua Lipa, Diplo, Sam Smith, Metallica and Marshmello, who has become the second most-subscribed musician.

Among the weekly highlights in more detail:

·   Beyoncé's "Halo" is her first video to pass a billion, while her Official Artist Channel recently crossed 20 million subscribers.

·   The DJ and producer Marshmello now has more than 44.1 million subscribers on his Official Artist Channel, which means he has edged past Ed Sheeran, who is taking a year's break from music and is on 44 million. Justin Bieber remains in the lead with 52.9 million.

·   Fans marked the death of Kenny Rogers with 16 million YouTube daily views of his catalog, led by "The Gambler" and "Islands in the Stream" with Dolly Parton. These songs also had the two top slots on Billboard's Digital Song Sales Chart.

The coronavirus pandemic, keeping more than a quarter of the world's population at home, has pushed up total internet hits by between 50% and 70% and streaming by more than 12%, according to initial estimates by independent analysts.

While Google has not given numbers for the total changes in YouTube hits during the lockdown, it confirms that the views have surged of some videos, both entertainment and educational.

The average views of videos with the solo tag #WithMe have increased by 600% since March 15 compared to their average views for the rest of the year. They include "Cook With Me," "Clean With Me," "Jam With Me" and "Study With Me."

Average global daily uploads of videos with "at home" in the title increased by more than 590% over the same period. Dua Lipa hosted a #StayHome and listen #WithMe livestream session and chat for her new album Future Nostalgia, which has won some glowing reviews. The "Stay Home" slogan mirrors the words of many governments in urging people to self-isolate and avoid spreading COVID-19.

Anecdotal evidence shows increases in many other channels. For example TheSoul Publishing, a digital studio, reported a jump in traffic. Its 5-Minute Crafts, which is among the Top 5 channels, had a 32% viewership increase across the U.S. in the last two weeks of March, while its other channels, including Bright Side, Slick Slime Sam and 7-Second Riddles, had boosts of 27% in the U.S. and as much as 29% in European markets such as Spain.

‘It’s real, I almost died’: St. Louis YouTube star recovers from COVID-19 - KSDK.com

Posted: 12 Apr 2020 07:30 PM PDT

ST. LOUIS — It started with some aches and pains he figured a trip to urgent care and taking pain relievers could treat. James Ross said, when he started coughing, he decided to drive himself to the DePaul Hospital in north St. Louis County.

"The ICU nurse said, 'Who can we call to read your last rights?' Ross said. "And I said, 'Last rights? Hey, where am I going? I'm just in here cause I got a cough'. She said, 'No, you're going to be here a while. Who can we call to read your last rights?"

From the time he arrived at the hospital, to about two weeks later when he left, Ross said he was whisked from one wheelchair to another and his feet never touched the ground.

"I was diagnosed with COVID-19 and pneumonia," Ross said.

He spent several days intubated, floating in and out of consciousness. During that time, Ross said he meditated on his faith and received a revelation that assured him he would survive. That, Ross said, prompted his fight to live.

After days on the ventilator in the ICU, Ross was permitted to move to an isolated space for recovery, where he had to gain enough strength to show he could breathe on his own and regain enough strength his legs to walk.

"I started believing I was Bob Gibson pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals at the '68 World Series at Busch Stadium with Jack Buck and Mike Shannon," Ross said. "I was the pitcher. I was Bob Gibson and I had to pitch to Babe Ruth."

Ross said he pictured various stories and images in his mind to draw strength. That, coupled with his unwavering faith, gave him courage.

"I had to lie to myself," Ross said. "I had to fool myself. I had to start believing in myself."

While he was recovering, Ross said he was surrounded by a strong support staff of nurses who treated him but also made him laugh. He said he sang songs to them, and they kept him informed on what was going on as the virus continued to bear down on the country.

"Everything around you is dying," Ross said.  "Man, it's a hard pill to swallow."

Ross said he remembered hearing the sounds of sirens and intercom calls as patients around him lost their fight with COVID-19. He said it was heartbreaking and only makes him overwhelmingly thankful that he survived.

"They were just telling me, 'James, you are so lucky because when you came in, your lungs were this, your lungs were that,'" said.

The day Ross was able to come home, he said his nurses wheeled him out of the hospital singing a Beyonce song to him to repay him for all the songs he sang to them.

"I was on my gurney, just twerking," Ross said.

Ross is back home, free of COVID-19 and not required to be quarantined, though he said he chooses not to leave his home.

"You know, when God brings you through something like that, you just don't want to take any chances," Ross said.

He said he wants everyone, especially the black community, to take the warnings and guidelines from federal, state and local officials seriously.

"It's real," Ross said. "I almost died. Take this stuff serious. If you're not going to take it for yourself, take it from me. I almost died."

Ross, who runs JROSS-TV, has made a career out of filming and interviewing top celebrities as they come through St. Louis. He turned his passion and dream job into his life's work, and he says loving people just comes with the territory. After almost losing his life, he said his mission to spread that love is only stronger.

"I've always been this way," Ross said. "But now, my purpose is just more fueled."

MANILA, Philippines – Ben&Ben is going global as they release their first international single "Doors," on Thursday, April 16 – and the band is celebrating with a special YouTube live event on April 18 at 7 pm.

The launch will be done on Ben&Ben's YouTube channel, where the band will perform "Doors," as well as other tracks from their 2019 debut album Limasawa Street. Each member of the 9-piece folk-pop collective will be connecting from their respective homes.

Aside from launching their new single, the band also aims to raise funds for coronavirus relief in the Philippines.

After the event, the live stream will continue to be available on YouTube as a video on demand.

"'Doors' is one of the most personal songs that we've written. It's about passive-aggressiveness, how it can ruin relationships, and how anyone can be on either the sending or receiving end of it," the band said of the new single.

"So much of the hurt in the world now, much of which we all experience daily as well, is caused by people not speaking what is really on their minds."

"We drew on our emotions on these topics to craft the melodies, riffs, beats, and textures of the song. It was done so quickly; one day we were jamming the song, and a few days after we already had the track on record. Everyone just performed their most raw and pure feelings to make the arrangement," they said.

"Doors" is mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Miles Walker, who has worked with Beyonce, Usher, Coldplay, Rihanna. It is mastered by Leon Zervos, who has worked with Pink, Maroon 5, Beastie Boys, Willy Nelson.

The new release is another feather in Ben&Ben's cap – the band, which has over 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify, recently entered the Billboard Social 50 Chart, a popularity chart ranking the most active musical artists on the world's leading social networking services. They've since climbed to #29 on the chart, ahead of international artists like Cardi B and Doja Cat.

Ben&Ben is made up of brothers Paolo Benjamin and Miguel Benjamin on acoustic guitars and vocals, Poch Barretto on electric guitar, Jam Villanueva on drums, Agnes Reoma on bass, Patricia Lasaten on keyboards, Toni Munoz and Andrew de Pano on percussions, and Keifer Cabugao on violin.

The band plans to continue releasing music throughout 2020 and plan to tour their live set again when possible. – Rappler.com
